Services for Women
We provide a wide range of women’s health services in the welcoming environment of an old terrace house in Leichhardt and in various locations in Sydney's inner west.
From our base in Leichhardt we have easy access to Parramatta Road and Norton Street, bi-lingual health workers, extended opening hours and the ability to arrange interpreters - all of which helps ensure the service is accessible to women living in the many suburbs around the area.
Women's health nurse clinics in Marrickville and Campsie and the ability to run groups at many community locations mean we reach women living throughout Sydney's inner west.
Our focus is on the particular issues affecting women, including:
Sexual health including pap smears, breast checks, contraceptive advice, pregnancy counselling and childbirth groups, non-directive pregnancy decision-making counselling and referral, post abortion counselling, menopause, menstrual issues, thrush, fibroids, sexually transmitted infections and continence…
Mental and emotional health including depression, anxiety, stress, relationship problems, eating issues and the health effects of domestic violence, rape and childhood sexual assault…
Other health issues including addiction to alcohol and other drugs, help to quit smoking, Hepatitis C, lesbian health, sexuality issues and chronic fatigue....
The centre also manages the Women Partners of Bisexual Men Service which is a state-wide service providing counselling, information and support groups to women whose male partners are homosexually active or attracted. See www.lwchc.org.au/womenpartners for more information.
Let us know your needs when you're booking your appointment.
Counselling assessment and referrals can be conducted in Vietnamese, Chinese, Spanish and English. We will also arrange qualified interpreters. Easier access to the building can be arranged for women with mobility issues or with prams.
Payment details
Most of the services at the centre are focussed towards women currently experiencing disadvantage and needing affordable, accessible health care. Therefore we try to keep costs low and achievable.
We appreciate a voluntary donation of $10 per visit, or $5 concession. Your voluntary contribution is up to you and is very helpful to the Centre.
We bulkbill Medicare for our doctors’ services. Bring your Medicare card with you.
Naturopathy, acupuncture and the drug and alcohol counselling are provided only to women on low incomes.
There is no charge for the acupuncture, counselling or women’s health nurse services.
Naturopathy will cost between $20 and $70 depending on your prescription.
The psychologist is registered with Medicare and with Victims Compensation. To access this counselling under Medicare you'll need a GPs referral. The psychologist will bulkbill Medicare or may talk with you about charging a gap (depending on your financial situation).
Groups and information nights are provided on a donation basis.
How to make an appointment
We have an appointment system and unfortunately do not provide drop-in crisis support. Phone to make an appointment for one of the services or to book into a group.
It generally takes at least one and a half to two weeks to get an appointment and we do not keep a waiting list.
Because we want to avoid creating waiting lists - which would tend to slow down women's access to the centre - appointments are only open two weeks to the day in advance. While this is not a perfect system, it seems to be fairest for everyone - sort of first in, first served! The Reception staff or your practitioner will explain the system to you. It's really quite straightforward once you're used to it.
Another approach used to make sure the service is accessible is to limit the number of appointments in some areas of service delivery, eg. counselling. This policy also reflects the centre's philosophy to assist women work towards wellbeing and independence.
From time to time we do have to close the books to deal with the current demand.
