Medical & Complementary Health Services

General Practitioner Clinics

We have two general practitioners whose areas of expertise span the range of women’s health issues including sexual/reproductive health and emotional/mental health issues.

First appointments with our doctors are 45 minutes and subsequent appointments will usually be 30 minutes. By offering long appointments we hope to provide an environment where women have sufficient time to discuss their health issues and treatment options.

Who the doctors see…

New appointments with the doctors are prioritized to: low income women who may also be single parents, lesbian and bisexual women, women with disabilities, women from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, women experiencing the health effects of violence and women with eating disorders or post pregnancy issues.

Costs: Our doctors services are bulk billed to Medicare. Bring your Medicare card with you.

Because of the demand for doctors’ appointments, it will often take at least one and a half weeks from the time you phone until the time of your appointment. Because of this, you are encouraged to ensure you have your own GP for urgent health issues and problems like coughs and colds.  We do not aim to take the role of the local family GP - our doctors' role will be to work with you on specific women’s health matters.

Women’s Health Nurse Services

Our women’s health nurse conducts clinics at the Centre most Tuesdays and on Thursdays in Campsie and Marrickville.

The nurse conducts health checks and provides advice and information on the range of women’s health issues including: pap smears, breast checks, pregnancy tests, contraception, fertility, post natal checks, menopause, sexually transmitted infections, depression, anxiety, quit smoking, all-options pregnancy counselling including pre and post abortion counselling, and referrals for women experiencing domestic violence.

Who the nurse sees...
Any woman is eligible for an appointment with the women’s health nurse.

Our nurse is a clinical nurse consultant, midwife and childbirth educator. Amongst the myriad of issues our nurse is across, she often sees couples by appointment who are wanting information about conception, ante natal health, preparing for childbirth and, importantly, settling bub at home after birth. Bookings: 9560 3011.

The Nurse also conducts talks on issues such as menopause, contraception, safe sex, sexually transmitted infections and post natal sexuality. Contact us for more details or email jo@lwchc.org.au.

Complementary Health Services

We believe in making otherwise expensive complementary health services as accessible as we can. Naturopathy and acupuncture run at Leichhardt Women's four days a week and are only for women who are on low incomes (less than $20,000 per year).

To make sure access is available to as many low income women as possible, appointments to the naturopaths and acupuncturists are also limited in number.  Acupuncture is limited to a course of treatment and naturopathy is limited a maximum of 12 sessions.

Costs:

          • Naturopathy treatment will be $20 to $70 depending on the prescription.
          • A voluntary donation of $10, or $5 concession at the time of the visit is appreciated and helps cover the Centre's running costs.

Health issues the naturopaths frequently work with include: improving depression and anxiety, nutrition, digestive disorders, reproductive health issues (eg. menstrual problems, menopause, fertility) and managing Hepatitis C symptoms.

The acupuncturists frequently work on alleviating stress, anxiety and depression and improving reproductive and other physical health issues.
