Counselling Services
Leichhardt Women's offers six types of counselling...
General Assessment and Referral counselling is a one hour session where the counsellor will talk with you and help you clarify your issues of concern. She will then discuss with you the most appropriate services available in the community which will meet your needs. You may also benefit from being referred to another service at Leichhardt Women’s such as naturopathy, acupuncture or to one of the groups. Assessment counselling is available to all women.
Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD) counselling is provided to women on low incomes with an addiction to alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. The counselling is also available for women who are affected by the substance use of a significant other (a partner or family member).
Women wanting assistance with drug and alcohol issues may receive counselling for up to 12 sessions.
Women Partners of Gay/Bisexual Men are able to access face-to-face, telephone and email counselling and attend support groups.
The Women Partners of Bisexual Men Service is the only funded service of its kind in Australia. Funded by NSW Health, the Women Partners staff provides confidential support to women dealing with relationship and personal difficulties resulting from their male partner's homosexual attraction or behaviour. This counselling and peer support service is accessed by women living throughout regional, metropolitan and rural NSW (and also often interstate).
We've published a book of women's stories! 'His Secret, Her Story' is the first Australian publication of its kind and gives the personal accounts of women dealing with their male partner's attraction to men. Order a copy of 'His Secret, Her Story' by going to www.lwchc.org.au/womenpartners, go to 'publications' and follow the details.
A counsellor with expertise in domestic violence and relationship dynamics sees women currently on low incomes for up to eight sessions or as required.
A psycholgist registered with Medicare and Victims Compensation is also available at the centre. To access her via Medicare, a referral from a General Practitioner and a Mental Health Plan outlining the health issues are both needed. In order to see the psychologist - make an appointment to see one of our GPs or contact us for more details. Our psychologist works two days a week. Women experiencing financial hardship are able to be Medicare only, or if eligible, Victims Compensation only.
Counselling for women who've experienced childhood sexual abuse is available one day a week. Conducted in partnership with the NSW Rape Crisis Centre the counsellor sees women for up to two years and counselling is provided for women on low income or currently experiencing disadvantage.
For all counselling, a voluntary donation of $10, or $5 concession, at the time of the visit is appreciated and helps cover the Centre's running costs.
